This… is London. Edward R. Murrow opened his Battle of Britain rooftop broadcasts with three words and a pause. The pause was the entire artifact. Heavy emphasis on this, then a beat of silence held just long enough to command the listening room - and only then the place name. Bombs detonated in the background. Sirens wailed. The pause became the show.
The pause was not Murrow’s instinct. It was coached by Ida Lou Anderson, his former college speech teacher, who listened to his early broadcasts and proposed the cleaner phrasing as a replacement for the inherited line Hello, America. This is London calling. It was, in plain terms, performance direction. The most credible voice in 20th-century journalism was built on a piece of vocal staging.
His sign-off matched: Good night, and good luck. Borrowed from what Londoners actually said to each other on parting during the Blitz, uncertain whether they’d see each other in the morning. Through these tiny linguistic artifacts, Murrow’s voice became CBS’s primary brand asset - the network’s authority shifted from corporate masthead to one man’s vocal cords. In 1954 he used the same accumulated credibility to dismantle Joseph McCarthy on See It Now. The pause invented in London was, by then, a national instrument.
