The Mission Years pitch flipped - local papers begging communities to keep them alive.

While The New York Times sold the truth is worth it and The Washington Post sold democracy dies in darkness, the local papers underneath them were dying. The internet decoupled the advertising monopoly from the printing press, and across the United States and Europe, local newsrooms collapsed at speed. The vacuum filled with what analysts called pink slime journalism - networks of algorithmically generated, partisan propaganda sites masquerading as legacy local outlets to exploit residual community trust.

In this environment the trust pitch inverted. National papers said: we will save democracy. Local papers, stripped of resources and staff, said: save us, so we can save your town.

Report for America, modelled on AmeriCorps and Teach for America and launched in 2017, placed emerging journalists directly into under-resourced local newsrooms to cover critical civic beats. The framing was explicitly democratic. Polarisation could only be healed through a shared, factual understanding of local realities. Civic hygiene, supplied by people on the ground who knew the names of the school board members and the water-utility commissioners.

The bifurcation became the chapter’s quietest contradiction. Elite national institutions monetised the defense of truth via subscriptions. Local institutions required charity and philanthropic life support simply to participate in the same defense. As one local editorial put it: the plain fact is that nobody is coming to save us - except us.
