Comment is free, but facts are sacred. The line was not conceived as marketing. It was an epistemological defense of the boundary between reporting and propaganda. Editor C.P. Scott published it in his sweeping essay A Hundred Years, marking the May 1921 centenary of the publication and his own fiftieth year at its helm. Emerging from the shadow of the First World War - an era defined by state-sponsored disinformation and patriotic coercion - Scott’s essay drew up a blueprint for an independent press that formally divorced the gathering of news from the ideological thrust of the editorial page.

The essay functioned as an operating manual for a privately held paper. Scott argued that a newspaper possesses a moral as well as a material existence, warning that a narrative-led approach tainted the unclouded face of truth and imperiled the publication’s soul. This explicit separation of fact and opinion became the ideological anchor for the Scott Trust, formed in 1936 to guarantee the commercial and editorial independence of the paper in perpetuity. By structurally immunizing the newsroom against proprietorial interference, the Trust ensured the paper remained beholden only to its readers.

By codifying the right of opponents to be heard alongside friends, Scott transformed a regional liberal paper into a global institution of record. The 1921 essay remains the foundational text of the modern verification economy - the argument that a publication’s commercial survival depends entirely on the sanctity of its data.
