The trust claim built on the tragedy of exile.

  1. The annexation of Crimea. The owner of Lenta.ru fired Galina Timchenko, the editor-in-chief, under Kremlin pressure. Nearly seventy reporters and editors walked out in solidarity, ending Lenta as an independent publication overnight. Timchenko, with Ivan Kolpakov and Ilya Krasilshchik, crossed the border to Riga and launched Meduza. The founders called it a pirate media ship - reporting the unvarnished truth back into Russia from beyond the immediate physical reach of the state.

For years, the model worked. Millions of Russian readers. A self-sustaining advertising business. Then the Russian state methodically dismantled it. Foreign agent in 2021, instantly destroying domestic ad revenue. Undesirable organisation in 2023, criminalising any sharing, association, or funding of the outlet by anyone inside Russia. The audience inside the country still reads, but does so at risk.

In late 2024, after ten years without a single ad campaign, Meduza launched its first - developed by the Berlin agency Lure, aimed at Western readers. Where other headlines end, Meduza begins. The pitch argues that legacy Western media covers the surface of the conflict, while exiled Russian journalists - the ones with the embedded networks, cultural fluency, and linguistic mastery - are the only people who can read the regime from the inside.

Here the trust claim is built on the tragedy of exile. Meduza is uniquely trustworthy precisely because the authoritarian state has exhausted every legal and technological tool to destroy it, and Meduza is still publishing.
