Press freedom as play. Banned journalism inside Minecraft.

Launched on the World Day Against Cyber Censorship in March 2020, The Uncensored Library bypassed authoritarian firewalls by hiding inside the architecture of a video game. Created by Reporters Without Borders with DDB Berlin and the design studio BlockWorks, the project exploited the open-world mechanics of Minecraft to construct a massive neoclassical digital library. Because Minecraft is largely ignored by state censors as a children’s entertainment platform, it provided a functional loophole to distribute restricted information into highly monitored states.

The structure houses entire wings dedicated to countries with brutal press suppression - Russia, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Mexico. Inside, players open in-game books to read the exact articles that resulted in the exile, imprisonment, or assassination of their authors. The wings include the work of Mexico’s Javier Valdez, murdered in 2017 for reporting on cartel corruption, and Saudi Arabia’s Jamal Khashoggi, assassinated by his own government in Istanbul. The campaign was a technical and creative triumph - millions of visitors from restricted territories, a 62% jump in donations, and the highly coveted D&AD Black Pencil.

By weaponizing the infrastructure of a Microsoft-owned video game against state intelligence agencies, RSF demonstrated a profound evolution in digital smuggling. The Uncensored Library is the most precise answer to censorship ever mounted: hide the truth inside the thing the censors haven’t learned to censor yet. Press freedom as play. Freedom as an Easter egg inside a children’s game.
