The internal AI policy document repurposed as a public-facing trust artifact.

Schibsted owns Aftenposten, VG, Aftonbladet, Svenska Dagbladet - the spine of Nordic legacy media. Operating under the corporate philosophy that trust doesn’t sustain itself, Schibsted treated its internal AI guidelines not as a back-office compliance document but as a piece of public-facing infrastructure. The policy itself became the campaign.

Agnes Stenbom, appointed Head of Trust Initiatives, and Olle Zachrison, Head of AI & News Strategy at Sveriges Radio, founded the Nordic AI Journalism network - roughly 500 members across the region collaborating on shared rules. The work earned the 2024 Swedish UNESCO Prize. Schibsted’s reader research, surveying 3,000 media users across Sweden and Norway, identified four drivers of media trust: credibility of process, credibility of content, personal relevance, and selectivity.

The seven recommendations published under Utgivarna draw a careful line. AI with significant journalistic impact must be disclosed. Internal tools - grammar checks, A/B testing, data sorting - do not. Most provocatively, the seventh recommendation explicitly advises against visual AI labels and icons. The argument is that universal stamps risk becoming digital background noise, ignored as quickly as cookie banners. Transparency, the Nordic model insists, must be contextual and textual: a sentence explaining how AI was used in this specific story, not a badge that means nothing.

The artifact on display is the policy itself. The trust pitch is institutional rigor, made legible.
