AI as a search interface over verified human reporting, not a generative oracle.

The Washington Post publishes Climate Answers as part of its Climate Lab, a public-facing experiment in constrained AI. Readers ask climate questions in a conversational interface. The model answers - but only from the corpus of articles already published, fact-checked, and bylined by Post journalists. The system is architecturally forbidden from inventing.

The framing is doing rhetorical work. The Post acknowledges the readers’ anxiety about hallucinations. It tells users plainly that the tool is experimental and that any claim should be verified against the underlying article. The AI is repositioned as a sophisticated index over verified human archives - not a writer, but a librarian trained on a single library.

Internally, the same logic shapes Helio FM and the broader Strategic AI program. The Post calls the paradigm Accelerated Knowledge Discovery: AI as a scientific collaborator that helps reporters navigate datasets, while final synthesis and publication remain strictly human. The trust pitch is not we keep the machines out. It is we keep the machines on a leash, and we show you the leash. In the Verification Economy, the leash itself is the product.
