Drew Ortiz Does Not Exist

The fabricated human byline that ended default trust in digital authorship.

In late 2023, Futurism reported that Sports Illustrated had been publishing articles written by AI under fabricated human bylines. Drew Ortiz, Sora Tanaka - names attached to AI-generated headshots and invented biographies. Sora Tanaka was described on her author page as a fitness guru who loves to try different foods and drinks. She did not exist. Neither did the volleyball expert who declared the sport popular because it was fast-paced, has a high skill ceiling, and is generally an exciting sport.

The third-party SEO contractor AdVon Commerce supplied the content. The Arena Group, then managing Sports Illustrated, denied the work was AI-generated. The denials did not survive contact with the metadata. The contractor was fired. The damage was permanent.

The scandal mattered not because AI wrote articles - that was happening across the industry - but because a trusted American masthead invented humans to conceal it. The artifact is the broken contract. For a century the parasocial agreement between reader and publisher was that a human typed the words. The Drew Ortiz byline ended the default.
