The Social Media Since 1884. The line is a reclamation. Facebook and X had spent a decade flattering themselves as the public square. Politiken responded with a simple historical correction - a curated, editorially responsible space where citizens gather, debate, and construct a shared reality is exactly what a newspaper has always been.
The framing was sharper than nostalgia. The campaign positioned algorithmic feeds as the loud, polluted descendant of something that already existed - and existed better. An 1884 masthead, edited by people whose names you can find, beats an opaque ranking system maximized for outrage.
Reported research after the campaign showed 56% of recall audiences had begun to view Politiken not just as a newspaper but as a superior, healthier social platform. The product had not changed. The frame had. The reader was no longer paying for information. The reader was paying to belong to a community that had been there for over a century - and would still be there once the algorithms moved on.
