Follow No One
STUFF · NZSTAFF-OWNED
The corporate ownership structure became the consumer pitch.
In 2020, Stuff Limited - the country’s largest newsroom - was bought back from its Australian parent for the symbolic sum of NZ$1. Local hands. Local accountability. No foreign owner extracting margins out of the country’s journalism.
Follow No One was the rebrand that followed. The slogan repositioned editorial freedom as a structural fact rather than an aspiration. There was no corporate parent to please, no political proprietor to flatter, no offshore conglomerate setting the news agenda. The journalists answered to no one - which was offered to readers as a guarantee they could not get anywhere else in the country.
The campaign turned a balance sheet into a brand. Follow No One leaned into national pride and an undercurrent of anti-corporate sentiment that had been building across the region. The internal financial structure of the business became its primary value proposition: trust us because we have nobody to lie for.
