Founded in Buenos Aires in October 1869 by José C. Paz, La Prensa set out to break with the Latin American tradition of newspapers as propaganda organs for political factions. The founding mission was professional reporting alongside fiercely independent editorials. So far, ordinary.
The innovation was material. La Prensa materialized its independence by running free legal clinics and free medical clinics for the city’s poor out of its own building. The paper was not just claiming to serve the public - it was operating as a shadow social service agency. Trust was no longer a rhetorical pitch. It was an architectural fixture.
This earned La Prensa both unprecedented influence and the durable hostility of authoritarian regimes. Juan Perón seized it in 1951. It returned to independent publication after his overthrow in 1956. The artifact demonstrates an early answer to the question every paper would eventually face: prove your independence. La Prensa proved it in concrete and waiting rooms.
